Responsible Skier/Rider Program
The Responsible Skier/Rider Program is designed to promote safety awareness and education for all snow sports users at Sunlight Mountain Resort. The purpose is to educate guests and employees about The Ski Safety Act, Colorado Revised Statutes Title 33, Article 44 section 33-44-109 Duties of Skiers and the National Ski Area Association’s (NSAA) Your Responsibility Code, promote safe skiing/riding, proper mountain etiquette, and attempt to create responsible skiing/snowboarding.
The Sunlight Ski Patrol team has a duty, with the assistance of other Sunlight Mountain employees, to enforce the Responsible Skier/Rider Program. Employees are asked to use the Responsibility Code as a guide and accomplish the following:
· Monitor skiing and snowboarding and report unsafe practices to Ski Patrol Dispatch.
· Explain offenses and educate the individual on why the action may endanger themselves and others and suggest more appropriate behavior.
· Assist Ski Patrol to document the attitude and seriousness of the infraction and revoke the ticket/pass if necessary.
· Ski patrol and Sunlight management will refer to the matrix of offenses as a guideline for maintaining a standard of managing unfavorable incidents at Sunlight Mountain.
Employees of Sunlight Mountain Resort will be held to a higher standard as a representative of Sunlight Mountain Resort and its values. An employee of Sunlight Mountain Resort may incur 1–14-day suspension, including probation, or termination of employment. The consequences will be at the discretion of supervisors and Mountain Management.
Your Responsibility Code
· Always stay in control. You must be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
· People ahead of you have the right of way. You must avoid them.
· Stop only where you are visible from above and do not restrict traffic.
· Look uphill and avoid others before starting downhill or entering a trail.
· You must prevent runaway equipment.
· Read and obey all signs, warnings, and hazard markings.
· Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
· You must know how and be able to load, ride and unload lifts safely. If you need assistance, ask the lift attendant.
· Do not use lifts or terrain when impaired by alcohol or drugs.
· If you are involved in a collision or incident, share your contact information with each other and ski area employees.
Safety is at the heart of every aspect of skiing and snowboarding. Whether it’s choosing the right gear, riding the lift properly, or progressing your skills on new terrain, there’s plenty of expert guidance on how to do it all safely.
To help you ride with confidence for years to come, we’ve compiled a list of essential topics and resources. No matter your skill level or discipline, these tools are designed to educate and empower you, ensuring that every trip to the mountain ends with a smile.
Have a question or a topic that you don't see represented here? Please contact us at info@sunlightmtn.com.
It's important to remember that we are sharing the slopes with skiers and riders of all different ages, abilities, and sizes. Your awareness of those around you and of the surrounding environment, as well as responsible skiing and riding, are the best ways to reduce the risk of a collision between you and another skier or with an object.
Tips for Avoiding Collisions
The tragedy of an on-snow collision inspired the development of the #RideAnotherDay campaign. This safety program is now a main pillar of collision safety at ski resorts across America and uses artwork and media to spread awareness about responsible skiing and riding.
