Thank you for participating in Sunlight Mountain Resort's Uphill Passport Program. The Roaring Fork Valley has an active up-hilling community and Sunlight Mountain Resort seeks to work closely with the National Forest Service, its local users, volunteers, private businesses, and others to facilitate uphill access and support up-hilling events.

Please respect that Sunlight Mountain Resort is in the business of downhill skiing with significant investments in snowmaking, grooming, and trail maintenance. Enjoying our slopes, snowmaking, snow grooming, and powder is a privilege. The goal of the passport program is to PRESERVE THE PRIVILEGE of uphilling while preventing accidents and injuries, as well as establishing and maintaining a communicative dialogue with uphill users.

Sunlight Uphill Policy:

Sunlight Mountain Resort allows uphill foot and skier traffic during the winter operating season, including pre-season and post-season. Uphill travel is closed while snowmaking operations are underway and other times as deemed necessary for guest and employee safety.

1. The guest must abide by the Uphill Pass rules as follow:

  • Uphill access is closed during snowmaking operations.
  • Dogs are not allowed on the mountain at any time.
  • Use designated routes; Obtain a map in the Guest Service Office.
  • Keep to the side of the trail, downhill traffic has the right of way.
  • Keep a minimum of 100 feet away from snowcats, snowmobiles and snowmaking equipment at all times! Never follow directly behind a snowcat.
  • There is no ski patrol or emergency services before or after normal operating hours. You Are On Your Own!

2. Persons accessing Sunlight Mountain Resort properties outside normal operating hours acknowledge that activities including, but not limited to, slope grooming, snow making, snowmobile traffic, special event setup and marked and unmarked obstacles pertaining to those activities may be exist on any slope at any time.

3. By accepting the terms of the Uphill Pass, the user acknowledges that his/her activities fall under the provisions of the Colorado Ski Safety Act as amended 2004.

Uphill Activity Overview:

  • I understand that ski area operations can be underway 24 hours a day including pre- and post-season.
  • I understand as an ascender I assume the same risks as a skier.
  • I understand that fat biking is not allowed within the ski area boundaries except in the case of an event hosted by Sunlight Mountain Resort.
  • I am aware that on-mountain hazards include: snowmaking equipment, extremely variable snow conditions, grooming cats, winch cats, snowmobiles, pipe and hoses, high voltage electric lines, variable weather conditions and other skiers.
  • I am aware snowmaking electric lines conduct high voltage and are to be avoided.
  • I am aware that snowmaking hoses and lines are often charged with very high pressure and are to be avoided.
  • I understand that I should stay out of the way of snow cats on the hill. Do not follow cats that are grooming.  Please stay at least 100 feet away from operating cats.
  • Please avoid all equipment and operations.
  • I understand that Sunlight does not allow dogs on the mountain at any time during the operating season. This policy is necessary in order to keep dog poop off of our slopes. Failure to observe Sunlight’s dog policy, and increased presence of dog poop on the slopes can potentially threaten the future opportunity of uphilling at Sunlight Mountain Resort.
  • On occasion any portion of our mountain can be closed to up-hilling, particularly when early-season snowmaking operations are underway. It is your responsibility to check if the mountain is open.
  • I understand uphillers may not access lifts without a valid pass or lift ticket.
  • I understand that there are no ski area services when the mountain is not in operation.
  • No services are provided outside of normal operating hours and rescues should be directed to the local Sheriff's Office (911).
  • I will obey closures, including preseason, post season and after operating hours. I understand the closures are in place for my safety.
  • I am aware that I share the mountain with other uphillers and will stay visible and alert to others.
  • Please be courteous to our employees and respect they are doing their jobs making snow, grooming, hosting events, and ensuring mountain safety.
  • Please keep an eye out for uphillers descending while you are ascending.

Nighttime Up-hilling:

  • Rescue outside of operating hours may be attempted by the Sheriff’s Office (911).
  • Sunlight Mountain Resort employees do not respond to incidents outside of operating hours.
  • Please respect the groomers by both moving out of their pass and staying off groomed terrain when possible.
  • Avoid winch cat operations. The cable can be stretched for several hundred yards down the hill and is very difficult to see and exceedingly dangerous. Crews will post signs and lights in the area when they conduct winching operations. Stay far away from these areas both ascending and descending.
  • Reflective clothing and headlamps are strongly recommended when ascending at night.

Pre- and Post-Season:

  • Extra care should be used ascending and descending prior to the start of a season and after shut down. Preseason is by far the most dangerous time for uphilling.
  • No snowmobiles or cats are permitted on the ski areas ever, including post season.
