The history of skiing in Glenwood Springs reflects a deep connection to the mountains and a local commitment to enjoying the outdoors. Skiing in the area began informally in the early 20th century, when locals used simple skis or snowshoes to traverse the surrounding hillsides and enjoy winter recreation. By the 1930s and 1940s, interest in skiing grew nationwide, and small community ski areas began popping up around Colorado, including near Glenwood Springs. Early skiers relied on natural snow and grassroots support, establishing a tradition of rugged, grassroots winter sports.
As the demand for skiing options increased in the region, Sunlight Mountain Resort was established in 1966 by a group of local enthusiasts and investors who wanted to create a family-friendly, accessible ski area near Glenwood Springs. The resort, named after the nearby historical coal mining town of Sunlight, opened with just a few trails and a single chairlift, operating on a combination of private and U.S. Forest Service land. Limited resources meant that the resort relied heavily on part-time staff and local volunteers to maintain operations. This modest beginning set the tone for Sunlight’s close-knit, welcoming community atmosphere that endures to this day.
Over the years, Sunlight has grown steadily. In 1996, snowmaking capabilities were added—a transformative upgrade that enabled more consistent snow conditions and extended the resort’s operating season. This enhancement coincided with the resort’s rebranding to Sunlight Mountain Resort, reflecting its evolution into a year-round recreation hub for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and a variety of summer activities like mountain biking, hiking, and disc golf.
Unlike many large Colorado resorts, Sunlight has stayed true to its original mission of offering affordable, high-quality skiing without the crowds. Its unique location and stunning views of Mount Sopris and the Elk Mountain Range have made it a hidden gem in the Rockies. Locals and visitors alike are drawn to Sunlight for its friendly atmosphere, varied terrain, and iconic expert runs, such as “The Heathen,” one of the steepest lift-served runs in the state.
Today, skiing in Glenwood Springs and at Sunlight Mountain Resort reflects a deep local pride and dedication to preserving the authentic Colorado ski experience.
While we pride ourselves in keeping true to our family-friendly, small mountain culture, we are excited about the new changes coming to Sunlight. The Spring of 2025 will mark the largest investment in the resort's history: the replacement of its beloved Primo and Segundo chair lifts. This milestone will not only increase the resort's lift capacity but also improve the overall skiing experience, enhancing access and reducing wait times. Set for completion by fall 2025, this upgrade will be ready for the 2025/26 ski season, ensuring the resort’s legacy continues with cutting-edge infrastructure while retaining its distinctive charm and community-focused atmosphere.
The iconic Primo lift, a staple route to Sunlight Mountain’s summit, will be replaced by a modern quad lift. This new addition features the latest technology, providing a substantial boost to lift capacity and shortening wait times. With this upgrade, skiers and snowboarders can look forward to more time on the slopes and less time in line. While awaiting final approval from the Forest Service, Sunlight is moving forward with confidence in this exciting transformation.
The Segundo lift, Colorado’s oldest operating chairlift and an integral part of Sunlight’s history, will be replaced with a new triple chair. Originally serving Aspen skiers from 1954 to 1969 and coming to Sunlight in 1973, Segundo has been transporting guests to the mountain’s west side for over five decades. This update is not only an enhancement but a tribute to Segundo's legacy in Colorado's skiing history. The 2024/25 season will be the last chance to ride this treasured lift, and Sunlight will celebrate its farewell season with special events and promotions, giving guests a final opportunity to experience this unique piece of skiing heritage.
