A Short History

Sunlight Mountain Resort, rooted in a historical coal mining town, opened in 1966 on a blend of private and U.S. Forest Service land. Starting with just a few trails and one chairlift, it initially operated with limited resources, relying on part-time staff and volunteers. Over the years, Sunlight experienced gradual growth, including the installation of snowmaking in 1996. This enhancement, along with a rebranding to Sunlight Mountain Resort, reflected its transformation into a year-round destination suitable for a diverse range of recreational activities. Throughout its development, Sunlight has maintained its original commitment to providing affordable, high-quality skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and other outdoor recreational experiences.
